Manjimup sculptor, Paul Fontanini, installed a new permanent sculpture in our Understory Garden Gallery in June 2025.

“With this work I wanted to show the hidden beauty in Nature’s decay,” says Paul.
“A rotted-out hollow Jarrah log has a myriad of textures that I captured by casting molten aluminium into its hollow cavity. The process is both destructive and preservative at the same time, locking the textures into the aluminium while destroying the mould with flame.”
Paul’s artwork was created from recycled materials: the aluminium comes from horseshoes, roof racks, pistons, manifolds and other car parts. The wrought iron around the jarrah base came from the tyres of an old cart.
Paul created the work using a forge and furnace he built himself in his home town of Manjimup.

We are delighted to showcase local talent and are extremely grateful that the Shire of Manjimup supports promotion of local creativity. The Shire helped contribute to the purchase of this artwork through a community grant. Additional funds came through sales of entry fees to the Understory Art & Nature Trail.
The Understory Garden Gallery is open daily and free to enter. The garden is still a work in progress with the official launch scheduled for Spring. Details TBA.
