Overview: Open Borders Regional Presentation Series
Regional WA has been opening its borders to new ideas and experiences through a series of interconnected art exhibitions, performances and a short film developed by artists living across twelve diverse communities scattered across the State.
The Open Borders regional events series is a unique initiative of The Creative Grid - a collective of like-minded arts organisations that collaborate on projects seeding, sharing and promoting regional creativity.
Commencing in Geraldton in July 2022, the series of activities unfolded throughout late 2022 and will continue through to May 2023.
Participating communities include: Geraldton, Broome, Dwellingup, Denmark, Esperance, Carnamah, Kununurra, Port Hedland, Ravensthorpe, Kalgoorlie, Northcliffe, Narrogin, Margaret River and Gascoyne Junction.
160 visual artists contributed to the 12 group exhibitions with approx 10 performers contributing to the performance based activities.

Connection & Collaboration to build creative capacity in regional WA
Open Borders is a connection and collaboration initiative across all 9 regions of WA. Numerous processes were used to facilitate network building such as online zoom gatherings to discuss project progress and artist meetings to build relationships of support and exchange at the local level.

Open Borders: Emergences [Margaret River]

"Each of us has a complex network of physical and psychological barricades in our lives. These can be environmental, imposed on us or self-erected. What happens when a barricade falls or is breached? Some may find euphoria in such a collapse. For others, the tension this creates can be crippling.” - Christopher Young.
Coordinated by Christopher Young and Anita Pettit with support from Dr. Laetitia Wilson.
The exhibition was open daily from 29 January to 5 March 2023.
