DIVE INTO THE JOURNEY OF A YOUNG ARTIST
Redraw is the first solo exhibition of young Manjimup-based artist, Nyx Birkhead. It chronicles their creative journey over the past eight years, reflecting upon the growth that comes from sticking with a passion to create.
Redraw brings together drawings created in Nyx’s early teens, with recent ‘redraws’ of original sketches allowing the viewer an intimate glimpse into the evolution of an artistic mind and maturing skill. It serves as a bite-sized look into the fruits of young creative labour.
Forever a creator, the throughline in Nyx’s life of constant change has been art. From scribbling as a child, sketching in mini sketchbooks through the family travels, to workbook page margins filled with drawings, and eventually, studying art, there has never been a waver in Nyx’s passion for drawing.
But Nyx knows that art is not often presented as accessible, or ‘smart’ to pursue, and so Redraw is created in part, to argue against that notion. Nyx has seen what honouring his love for art has brought him, the connections he has made, the skills he has gleaned, the opportunities he has been given. Even now, in the midst of early adult life, he is pursuing a tattoo apprenticeship and has his own solo exhibition, amazing pathways that would have never been opened had he turned his back on his creativity. “It’s been a challenge and a long journey of creating for this exhibition, but a worthwhile one.
The exhibition offers a challenge to others too: “Don’t you see where chasing your passion can lead you?”

Although Nyx has had his works exhibited in previous galleries and events, Redraw serves as his first solo exhibition, a first narrative crafted for himself. “This is an amazing opportunity to take a personal look down memory lane; a chance to reflect on how far I’ve come as an artist.”
The opening event will commence at 5pm August 21. The launch is free and open to the public. The exhibition will be formally opened by Tara Brooks. The artist will be present and provide a brief talk.
