CALL FOR EXPRESSIONS OF INTEREST FROM FIRST NATIONS ARTISTS
Gondwana Link supports large-scale bush restoration across the south of Western Australia (WA) and seeks to connect people with nature through a variety of art projects. Gondwana Link is supporting the Genestreaming Sculpture Trail Project and is inviting Noongar artists to participate.
PROJECT
Genestreaming sculptures engage visitors in stories of ecological & cultural deep time. The human-scale mixed-media sculptures are being created by artists Ben Beeton and Mali Moir of Art of Nature in collaboration with Aunty Carol Pettersen (Menang Elder), alongside a team of local knowledge holders and artists.
We’re inviting Noongar artists to participate by submitting an existing painting, or by creating a new work. Artworks will be a response to the unique bush environment, animals, insects, birds, and plants of the Southern Forests region for a sculpture to be located in the town of Northcliffe. Other sculptures in the trail are located in Kings Park, Dallyellup, Bremer Bay, Hyden and Ravensthorpe.
The Artist’s affinity with these places can be through a variety of ways including family connection or lived experience. To learn more about the Genestreams Sculpture Project please visit https://heartlandjourneys.com.au/places/gondwana-link-sculpture/
USAGE & FEE
For each selected work, a once-only fee of $500 will be paid for the usage rights of a hi-res photograph of the selected painting (please let us know if we can help you with hi-res photography). This digital image will then be featured as printed or digital material in a public artwork. Each artwork image will be utilised for one ‘petal’, approx. 3m x 30cm. As this is a fairly unique format the artwork might need to be repeated or cropped. Artists will keep their original paintings, and will be credited on the Genestreaming website (in development).
SUBMISSIONS
Artists of all ages, and at all career levels are welcome to submit their work. We encourage submissions from artists of any gender, LGBTQIA+ identifying individuals and
people with a lived experience of disability.
If you’re interested in submitting your paintings for consideration, first please register via email at roger@gondwanalink.org. A response email will detail submission instructions. Artist’s contact information will be kept confidential.
SELECTION
Criteria include the painting’s connection to place and its nature and bush environment; the aesthetic quality of the work; and whether it complements other works that will form part of the mixed-media sculpture. Final selection for the Northcliffe sculpture will include input from a working group of First Nations community members, including Bibbulmun Noogar Elders.
Selection priority is in the following order: Bibbulmun Noongar artists living on Bibbulmun Country, Bibbulmun Noongar artists living on Noongar Country, Noongar artists living on Bibbulmun Country, First Nations artists living on Bibbulmun Country, First Nations artists living on Noongar Country.
