Born and educated in Western Australia, Tony Davis is an acclaimed sculptor, artist and educator whose creative career spans more than five decades. Since beginning his exhibiting practice in 1973, he has presented numerous solo and group exhibitions and has become widely recognised for his distinctive sculptural works that explore the relationship between people, place and the natural environment.
Tony works predominantly with Western Australian native timbers, often combined with corten steel. Drawing on a lifetime of experience as both a fine wood craftsman and furniture maker, he is particularly interested in the tactile and expressive qualities of wood. Through his sculptures, he explores themes of shelter, belonging and humanity’s connection to the landscape, using materials that carry their own histories of time and place.
A frequent exhibitor in Sculpture by the Sea, Tony has participated in the renowned exhibition 24 times, including 14 appearances at Cottesloe and multiple exhibitions at Bondi. In 2022, he was awarded the prestigious Aqualand Sculpture Award at Sculpture by the Sea Bondi for his work.
His sculptures are held in numerous private, corporate and public collections across Australia and internationally, including Minderoo Foundation, Curtin University, Snowy Valleys Sculpture Trail, the Supreme Court of Western Australia, the City of Bunbury, the City of Wanneroo and Gowings.
Through a practice grounded in materiality, craftsmanship and environmental connection, Tony continues to create works that invite reflection on the evolving relationship between humanity and the world around us.
