Printmakers Elmari Steyn & Shelley Cowper have collaborated on an ambitious exhibition, Amygdala, presented at the Painted Tree Gallery in September-October 2024 as part of the Indian Ocean Craft Triennial.
About the exhibition
The amygdala is part of the limbic system and controls memory and emotion. The practice of deliberate nasal rhythmic breathing affects the amygdala. This concept of rhythmic breathing and the transient nature of a single breath is the seed from which this installation developed.
Clusters of fragile, layered paper spheres communicate the barely visible existence of breath and translate the thoughts, memories and emotions that for a moment linger, pass, and then are lost.
A collective language between Cowper and Steyn, Amygdala decodes and translates visual memories, artistic voices, and breath into a three-dimensional tangible reality.
Exhibition opening
Amygdala was launched on Friday 20th September from 3-5pm. Artist Tony Windberg opened the show.
