Artwork Commission: ‘Imagine More’ by Fiona Gavino.
In late May-early June 2021, Fremantle based basket-maker extraordinaire, Fiona Gavino, spent 10 days in Northcliffe as Artists in Residence. She worked with more than 20 regional residents and visitors to random weave from cane a new sculpture for the Understory Art & Nature trail.
The finished work is called, ‘Imagine More’. The title reflects the incredible variety of interpretations people offered the artist when viewing the work. One saw a swan, another a heart, a Dr Seuss car, a submarine, even an Indigenous fishing trap.
Fiona came to the community with an open mind about the work that would evolve. It speaks to the site and to the people who participated in its construction.
The project, originally called Interwoven, was developed as a response to Covid-19, an opportunity to re-thread the fabric of social connectivity that bind us to each other and to the place we call home.
