This is our tenth Shroom Zoom within the Mycelium project. Each session features a guest facilitator invited to explore topics of interest within the regional arts sector. The Zoom Rooms allow us to connect, increase sector collaboration, resilience and sustainability, support community vitality and grow wellbeing for regionally based creative practitioners.
DATE: Thursday 17th June
TIME: 2.30- 3pm
GUEST FACILITATOR: Leah Rakbundel, Isla Birnie & Naomie Hatherley (artists – and mums – working in Broome)
TOPIC: A state-wide, cross artform, discussion on art and motherhood (facilitated by 3 Kimberley arts in an exhibition of the same title).
As identity is chipped away by the machine of motherhood, a treasure trove of new mum-mineral veins appear. We discover we are sitting on the Mother Lode – a wealth of resources in strength and creative ingenuity. Mother lode explores the intersection of art and motherhood, the need for ‘A room of one’s own’ (Virginia Woolf, 1929) and moves beyond old fashioned ideas of ‘the pram in the hallway’ (Cyril Connolly).
This zoom discussion will explore our joint experiences, successes and challenges of making art and mothering. In particular we will reflect on the recent group exhibition in Broome titled ‘Mother Lode’ with artists Isla Birnie, Leah Rakabundel, Naomie Hatherley, Susannah Williams and Vanessa Margetts.
Our discussion will explore the topics of:
– Collaborating with children
– Motherhood as a source of inspiration and subject matter
– Finding time and space – Lenka Clayton’s Artist Residency in Motherhood
– Other artist-mothers who inspire us
– Ideas for future collaborations
