EXHIBITION: THE ALTERNATIVE ARCHIVE – MIX A collection of works from MIX Artists Albany. May 8th – June 7th 2021. Painted Tree Gallery, Northcliffe.
Exhibition opens on Saturday 8th May at 3pm with live music by Peter Hill and Kevin Jones.
This group exhibition responds to the theme of The Alternative Archive, a concept developed by lead curator Anna Louise Richardson, and explored by artists and communities across regional WA during 2018-19 as part of the original Creative Grid project.
This touring version of the original MIX show will be on display at the Painted Tree Gallery Northcliffe to complement the concurrent survey of the larger statewide project due to open at John Curtin Gallery in Perth on May 13th.
MIX Artists Inc, a group of contemporary artists from the Great Southern, investigated this theme during 2018. Twenty four MIX members reflected on and investigated subjects of meaning to each of them. Those interests range from the very personal and socio-cultural to the historical and ecological.
For their final artwork, each artist worked within parameters set by the exhibition curator Paul Moncrieff – a 50 cm x 50 cm square wooden open box with a 7 cm deep edge. Paul Moncrieff explained “The artists have responded to this challenge in a range of ways. Some have used it as a surface for painting or a frame for mixed media works, while others have used it as a base for their three dimensional work. The consistent format unifies the diverse artworks and the resulting exhibition is presented as a complete archive of MIX Artists’ interests. It will be a fascinating show.”
Three artists will provide artist talks at the opening.
There are 12 participating artists in the Northcliffe touring show:
