ABOUT THE ARTIST:
Thomas (Tomas) Chvojka was born in Prague, Czech Republic, where he completed his high school education. He showed an unusual talent as a pianist in his early teens, which culminated in his winning of the national piano competition in his native country in 1965. He studied for nearly two years at the Prague Conservatorium of Music until his family immigrated to Australia for political reasons after the invasion of the Soviet Army.
Thomas then completed his studies at the New South Wales Conservatorium of Music, gaining his DSCM and LMusA Diplomas. In 1971 he won the Open Championship of the prestigious Sydney Eisteddfod. He then became an active performer as well as a teacher in his large private studio. However, teaching became his main focus and passion. After settling in Western Australia some 30 years ago, he became an examiner for the Australian Music Examinations Board and also joined the Western Australian Music Association and became actively involved in the running of the Association. He eventually became the President for one year, replacing the long serving Heather Brittan. Thomas enjoyed his several years in various roles in the Association and says they were very exciting and fulfilling years of his professional life.
As a teacher, he has always been keen for his students and his own children to take part in various Eisteddfods and performing opportunities. He frequently attended these Eisteddfods as a member of the audience and also as an adjudicator. He adjudicated many Eisteddfods in Perth and also in the country. He now lives in the tranquil township of Quinninup where he continues to teach and perform, however he recently retired from examining for the AMEB. He also continues to devote a lot of time to the profession of string instrument restoration and violin making. His hobbies include cycling and photography, and he is also a passionate advocate for the protection of the environment.
